Northeast forecast: Strong damaging winds Saturday, better later

It’s the second day of severe storms. There are several reports of trees down or uprooted across north-central Ohio and also over northern Georgia. The strong storms are about to exit the Southeast, but there could be another round of severe storms that could bring very strong winds across Pennsylvania and New York late this afternoon into the evening.

The large storm and its cold front that produced the severe weather outbreak on Friday are on the move. There is still one more day of severe storms on Saturday as the cold front sweeps over the Southeast and developed strong to some severe storms early morning. The evening will bring rounds of severe weather for the Northeast as an impulse of energy emerging from the same complex system will ignite severe storms. Expect them to develop after 1 p.m. ET, likely affecting western New York and far western Pennsylvania.

This cluster of storms will likely look small on the radar, but it will likely pack a strong punch. There will be a comma-like feature moving through Pennsylvania and New York which usually means very strong winds moving through along with the thunderstorms. By 7 p.m. the strong to severe storms will likely stretch from southern Vermont, through western Massachusetts, NYC, and western Connecticut. Philadelphia could also get some clusters of storms moving through the region at this time. There could be some storms that could still turn severe producing hail, and damaging winds and we can't rule out a tornado or two.

By 9 p.m. the storms will be around the Boston area and will be offshore, parallel to Long Island. Also, these storms will likely be weakening a bit as they enter the ocean and lose the heat from the Sun.

There will be strong winds from the north overnight likely lasting through Sunday afternoon. Gusts could reach 40-50 mph. Skies will be clearing and Sunday’s high temperatures will be in the 40s across much of the Northeast, with mid-30s across inland locations. This is about 5 to 10 degrees below normal for the season. The cold temperatures will stay put on Sunday night into Monday. Lows staying around the freezing mark to start off the work week.
