Northeast wintry mix
Glaze of ice & 2 inches of snow

ice storm

This week’s clipper system is underway, bringing rain, a wintry mix and snow across the Upper Great Lakes and soon the Northeast. Winter weather advisories are in place.

A clipper system is making its way across the U.S. - CAN border across the Upper Great Lakes today and will reach the Northeast by this evening. Snow, rain, and a wintry mix have all been reported from Wisconsin to Michigan today.

The rain-snow line is very far north, keeping things mostly rainy across the Upper Great Lakes. The storm will make its way east this afternoon, first reaching western New York with rain and mountain snow but slowly turning over to an icy mix tonight as the temperatures drop.

Winter weather advisories are posted and include Oneonta to Utica to Plattsburgh, N.Y., as well as all of Vermont. A glaze to a tenth of an inch of ice is possible in addition to a coating of snow as the wintry mix moves through. Pittsfield, Mass., is also included.

As the WeatherRadar shows, the wintry weather begins late tonight, possibly after midnight. It becomes more widespread as the storm shifts east, especially for the morning commute.

This won’t be long-lived, however. Temperatures will slowly rise throughout the day, allowing the precipitation to change over to rain by the late morning, from west to east. New Hampshire and Maine will get the snow and wintry mix by mid-morning.

As far as snow totals go, the changeover to rain across eastern New York and Vermont would keep snow totals down and the ice melting. However, the snow lasts longer over New Hampshire and Maine due to the drier air available. Most spots can expect no more than 2 inches of snowfall before the event has cleared by late Thursday night into Friday morning.

Read up on ice storm safety and have your winter emergency kits stocked and ready if you’ll be traveling during the storm for your work or school commute.
