Stunning aurora borealis have been spotted in the north of Iceland in recent days.

Aurora season is underway, as of September, a magical light display has already been witnessed under the skies of northern Iceland, near Norðurland vestra, Höskuldsstaðir, on the 15th of the month.

Solar activity in recent weeks has remained high, which has allowed the observation of both the traditional green auroras, but also the much rarer red auroras. Below is a selection of shots from the last few days.

Places like Iceland and Scandinavia, in addition to Canada and Alaska are common viewing grounds of the aurora borealis, but can also be found in the southern hemisphere too, where they are termed aurora australis.

On rare occasions, the aurora borealis, or northern lights, can be seen across the northern U.S. during big geomagnetic storms. Viewing conditions are highly reliant on cloud cover, which you can keep an eye on through our WeatherRadar.
