A mesoscale convective system (MCS) has been impacting many from St. Louis to the Deep South on Monday, sliding hundreds of miles in a matter of hours.

What is a mesoscale covective system?

These are known for being a collection of thunderstorms that are in one system. Mesoscale is a sizing term used in meteorology to describe medium-sized systems. Compare this to 'synoptic scale' meaning large-sized systems, like a high pressure that covers the entirety of the western U.S.

MCSs tap into heat and abundant moisture to keep their energy flowing. They can drop heavy rain within the thunderstorms very quickly, sometimes causing flash flooding. The WeatherRadar shows Monday's system.

The system has become more bowed and more organized as it has come in contact with a warm, water-laden environment in the Deep South.
