Three La Pine High School students injured in a school bus accident in Oregon due to icy road conditions. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a school bus carrying La Pine High School students skid off Crescent Cutoff Road, a challenging mountain pass in Oregon. The Bend-La Pine school bus, en route to a welding competition at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, encountered ice on Highway 61, resulting in the bus sliding off the road, striking a tree, and overturning. Among the passengers, three students sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local clinic for medical attention.

This route, part of the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest, is known for its unstable weather, especially during the winter months. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has issued warnings about Crescent Cutoff Road, advising that it receives limited winter maintenance and cautioning drivers about snow or packed ice from November to April.

This region, bridging Klamath and Deschutes counties, is characterized by steep, narrow, and curvy roads, making it a challenging drive during inclement weather. The use of chains or traction control devices is strongly encouraged in these conditions.

The recent accident is not an isolated event for the Bend-La Pine School District. Earlier this fall, another school bus was involved in a crash on Highway 31 near La Pine. In that incident, a Sunriver man was cited for careless driving after failing to stop for the bus, leading to a collision with an oncoming car. These incidents collectively highlight the heightened risks associated with traveling in such mountainous terrains during cold, wintry conditions.

Given these dangers, it is crucial for folks to remain vigilant in similar mountain regions with steep and windy roads. Regularly checking Weather & Radar app and platforms like ODOT's TripCheck can provide vital information on road conditions, cold temperatures, and wintry precipitation. Staying informed and prepared can significantly reduce the risk of accidents in these treacherous mountain passes, ensuring a safer journey for all.
