Prepping your home for autumn

Autumn foliage

We’re just days away from the Autumnal Equinox and we're already into Meteorological Autumn. Getting your home prepped for the cooler season now can save time and energy before the sweater weather settles in for many.

Here are a few items to get you started.

Check your exterior

  • Inspect your roof and siding and check for missing pieces or damaged areas.
  • Clean the gutters and downspouts to make sure your drainage is ready to take on heavy storms.
  • Check out the trees to make sure there are no hanging limbs that could damage your roof or the power lines.
  • Reinforce your doors and windows with the proper storm windows/doors if you use them for your home. Seal and caulk if needed.
  • Clean up your landscaping, rake leaves, and trim bushes.
  • Plant those bulbs to be ready for Spring!
  • Put away the hoses, watering cans and turn off outdoor faucets to avoid freeze damage.

Inside the home

  • Service your furnace and have your fireplace and chimneys cleaned to prevent fire hazards. Don’t forget to change the air filter!
  • Check doors and windows for drafts. Sealing these now will save on energy costs during the cooler days.
  • Clean out the humidifier and change the filter.
  • Change out the batteries in smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Look around your insulation to check for gaps and cracks and repair if needed.
  • Program your thermostat to adjust to the cooler weather.
  • Declutter the house! You'll likely be spending more time indoors and having a tidy space will help you relax.

Preparing your home now can save you from having to rush when the cold air moves in and will leave you more time to enjoy the beauty of Fall.
