    Quiet Atlantic in mid-October

Quiet Atlantic
Below-average activity continues

On average, the busiest portion of the Atlantic hurricane season wraps up in mid-October. Other than Isaias, the quiet Atlantic season continues. Is this normal?

We've only seen one hurricane this 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, with 8 other named tropical storms. Since records began in 1851, more than 230 hurricanes have formed in October alone. The WeatherRadar shows a quiet forecast over the next several days. Luckily, this quiet forecast leaves portions of the Gulf Coast, where Isaias caused intense impacts, the opportunity to continue cleaning up.

This season's lack of activity is all thanks to a strong El Niño. Dry, sinking air is the usual impact the Atlantic experiences during El Niño, preventing the organization of tropical disturbances.
