Rain and snow continues for western half

The western U.S. remains active as Pacific storm systems continue to bring rain and snow to the region. While the flood threat has decreased, heavy snow will pile up along mountain peaks.

California residents are still reeling after a record-shattering atmospheric river brought flash flooding and mudslides to the region. While the flood threat has decreased, a stormy pattern will bring more trouble to the western half of the U.S. through the end of the week.

The WeatherRadar shows an active picture Wednesday morning, with showers and even thunderstorms remaining in the forecast for the West Coast and the Southwest as another Pacific storm drops down along the coast. It will be soggy in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles as moderate to heavy rain falls. Rain totals of up to an inch are possible.

While the flood threat is much lower than it was over the weekend and into early this week, additional rain in areas already hard-hit by the atmospheric river may cause trouble. Remember to avoid flooded areas. The additional rainfall will also slow cleanup efforts and may impact travel.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories stretch across the Sierra into the Rockies. An additional foot of snow is expected for the highest peaks in the Sierras. The higher elevations of the northern Rockies and Central Great Basin will see 4-10 inches through the end of the week, while peaks in the Four Corners region could see up to two feet of snow accumulation.

Snow will also stretch into the northern Plains by Wednesday night, where light ice accumulations and 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected. Before heading out, make sure you check conditions in your area using the WeatherRadar.
