Rain moves up the East Coast making for travel trouble along I-95

Soggy drive on I-95
Rain moves up the East Coast

Rain is expected to move up the East Coast Wednesday into Thursday as a coastal low develops and tracks north from the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast.

The same system that brought up to half a foot of rain to western North Carolina yesterday will bring soggy conditions from the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast on Wednesday and Thursday as a coastal low develops. Travel may be treacherous, especially along the busy I-95 corridor.

The WeatherRadar shows scattered showers and a few thunderstorms stretching from the North Carolina coast into New England Wednesday morning. The biggest concern will be flash flooding, especially urban and street flooding in major metro areas like Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and New York City.

A marginal risk of excessive rainfall, a level one out of four, is in place from Virginia into the Northeast. In addition to urban flooding, rising creeks and streams may be an issue. Travel delays from Virginia into southern New England are also a concern since roads are often busy post-Christmas.

NE rain totals

Rain totals will vary, but up to 2 inches are expected in the Northeast Wednesday into Thursday morning. The heaviest rain will be moving offshore by Thursday night, but the slow-moving low will keep a chance of showers in the forecast through late Friday and even into Saturday morning. The lingering moisture could lead to problems for travelers headed to Boston, New York City, and Washington D.C.

Check conditions on the WeatherRadar before heading out, especially if you are traveling.
