Record warmth over Alaska
Balmy 67F measured on December 26

Record warmth in Kodiak Alaska.

Conditions in Alaska are normally bitterly cold and snowy at this time of the year, but in Kodiak, temperatures hit a record high on December 26th beating previous records by over 20 degrees.

Temperatures soared to a very balmy 67F on Sunday in Kodiak. This is the highest temperature ever recorded in December for Alaska. The previous record was 45F recorded in 1982, 1983, and 1984.

According to the National Weather Service, it is also the warmest temperature on record for any time between October 5th and April 21st, meaning it would have set a new monthly record in November, January, February, and March as well.

The temperatures came amid a spate of unseasonable warmth with 65F recorded at Kodiak Airport and with Unalaska seeing eight December days with temperatures over 50F and Alaska's warmest Christmas Day on record with 56F.

Along with record heat, Alaska has also endured something atypical for the time of year: heavy rainfall. Fairbanks, saw its wettest December day in history on Sunday too, with 2 inches of rainfall.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
