Fresh autumn storms
Rumbly Plains trouble

The Autumnal equinox is less than three days away, but a few summer-like storms are possible across the Plains.

A cold front separating colder autumn air from unseasonably hot and humid air stretching from Texas to the western Great Lakes will be the focus of thunderstorms today and tonight.

The WeatherRadar shows storms stretching from the Kansas City area northward into Minnesota Arrowhead early Thursday afternoon. Additional storms will roll across the Upper Midwest, including Des Moines, Iowa, Minneapolis and Duluth, Minn.

The biggest dangers will be quick bursts of damaging winds and lightning.

It has been a busy morning, with thunderstorms producing a lightning show across Iowa early Thursday.

Although storm season winds down as autumn takes hold, thunderstorms are still possible across the Plains. Track them with the WeatherRadar and make sure notifications are turned on to get alerted of nearby ones.
