Dallas, Plains face severe storm risk

Breakfast brief

Storms continue to pose a risk for severe weather impacts and flooding across the South and Central Plains today, while Florida stays hot and a warming trend kicks off across the Great Lakes and Northeast.

Did you know?

On this day, in 1987, an F5 tornado, the highest intensity on the Fujita scale, struck McCracken, Kansas. Fortunately, the tornado did not cause any fatalities.

Today's weather outlook

WeatherRadar indicates ongoing showers and thunderstorms across central and northern Texas this morning. While these conditions are expected to remain mild through the morning, the storms are likely to intensify during the afternoon and evening. Additionally, new storm activity will develop across the central Plains later in the day.

National forecastThe Thursday national WeatherRadar shows strong storms from Texas through the central Plains, while portions of the Ohio Valley and Northeast experience afternoon temperatures in the mid to upper 60s.

In contrast, the Great Lakes, Ohio River Valley, and the Interior Northeast will remain dry, but experience much below-average temperatures today. A gradual warming trend over the weekend should bring temperatures in these regions closer to typical June levels.

In the southern regions, including the Desert Southwest, southern Texas, and southern Florida, conditions will remain hot. Heat index values will exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit in most of these areas.
