Smoke is causing major problems across the Mid-Atlantic

Wildfires burning across Canada are continuing to send smoke across the Great Lakes, Midwest and East today, turning the sky milky, adding a whiff of charred wood to the air and causing air quality to remain at dangerous levels.

The smoke is even showing up on the WeatherRadar as a faint grayness that would normally be clear of clouds. Check the air quality in the app for the latest conditions in your area.

Good news, temporary improvement in the sky conditions are expected Saturday and Sunday. A cold front will sweep across the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and the Northeast Saturday. This will push the smoke offshore while triggering strong thunderstorms from the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast Saturday.

Sunday will be much milder with highs only in the 80s from the Midwest into the Northeast. The sky will also be much bluer than the smoke-caused milky sky seen over the last several days.

Looking ahead to next week, a return to more smoke-filled sky isn't out of the question, especially later next week. High pressure will develop over the eastern Plains, spreading smoke from the Ontario fires southeastward once again. Stay tuned for more information.
