Metroplex snow ceases, moves to SE Texas

Roads will continue to be messy across parts of Texas. It will take a while for the snow to melt over North Texas. In this blog, we will highlight the big events affecting the state as this winter storm moves through the region.

3pm CT

The heavy winter precipitation has stopped across the Metroplex area. But remember that across the northern half of the state, ice was first to build then snow fell on top. Temperatures won’t be going above that freezing point until about Saturday afternoon. This is a bad combination as the roads and other surfaces will likely remain frozen.

Icy threat moves to the south. Although Houston will mainly see rain through the evening, the temperatures will be borderline to hovering near the freezing mark, which could bring a threat of freezing-over bridges and overpasses.

Areas to the northwest of Houston, freezing rain and snow continue to fall in College Station. By 7p.m. CT, the winter precipitation should be ending over College Station, but still affecting Huntsville through Hempstead and Columbus, about 50 miles northwest of Houston.

For the Space City, rain will continue to fall through the evening, as the frontal boundary moves south toward Galveston. Some of the clouds could be clearing overnight which will allow the temperatures to fall to the upper-20s. Otherwise cloudier areas will remain in the low-30s.

By Sunrise, there are some models that suggest that enough moisture could be hanging on by the coast and with temperatures being around 32 degrees, there could be some freezing rain or sleet affecting Corpus Christi to areas just west of Galveston.

Make sure to stay off the roads in the evening and in the morning if there is the threat for winter precipitation to still be around.  Temperatures will stay cold, and with the breezy conditions they could feel as low as in the low-to-mid 20s.

Noon CT

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport has opened operations on one runway but continues to treat other runways. It is likely that operations are intermittently disrupted throughout the day as winter weather continues to affect North Texas.

9:30 a.m. CT

According to poweroutages.us, which monitors the electricity of over 12 million customers across Texas, there are over 60,000 customers without power this morning. This number will likely continue to increase and ice builds and the winds increase.

Dallas-Fort Worth International airport has suspended operations due to the winter weather. Runways are being treated for snow and ice. The airport might become operational by noon.

Much of the northern half of the state woke up to a white blanket of snow over the roads and in backyards. But much of this snow has fallen after the rain has frozen and ice and built over surfaces, which makes the situation even more dangerous throughout the day.

The forecast for Texas as the winter storm moves through

We do not forecast the temperatures to rise above that freezing point until Saturday, which will keep the ice and snow in place until some melting starts this weekend over the northern half of the state.

San Antonio continues to see mostly rain falling from the sky this morning, but it is quickly transitioning to ice over surfaces and black ice is reported on the roads. Expect the roads to continue to become dangerous over the afternoon as snow falls on top of this layer of ice. This will also happen over bridges, overpasses, driveways, and walkways.

Please be careful. Avoid traveling tod. The weather will improve on Friday, and temperatures will increase for the southern half of the state, at least to above the freezing point, which will allow for some melting, however, it will remain cold and breezy.
