Snow showers swirl in the South and the chill sticks around into the weekend

Weekend chill
Snow showers swirl in the South

The first snowflakes of the season will fly for parts of the South Friday into Saturday as moisture meets up with chilly air. The chill will linger into the weekend.

The WeatherRadar is active this morning with snow showers stretching across northern Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and into Kentucky. Cities like St. Louis and Evansville, Ind., are dodging snowflakes on their Friday morning commutes. Snow showers will track into Kentucky and Tennessee later today. Nashville and Memphis, Tenn., as well as Bowling Green and Louisville, Ky., will pick up some measurable snow. Even cities such as Huntsville, Ala., and the Atlanta metro may even see flurries Friday afternoon and evening.

By Friday night into Saturday morning, snow showers will spread into the Appalachians, bringing light snow to cities like Knoxville, Tenn., and Charleston, W.Va. Snow totals are not expected to be impressive across much of the South, amounting to just a few tenths of an inch in areas like Nashville and north Georgia. While this moisture-starved system is unlikely to produce major travel hurdles, even light snow showers can make traveling hazardous. It's a good idea to check road conditions and the WeatherRadar before heading out.

Higher elevations will see the most accumulation from this system. Winter weather advisories are in place for the Cumberland Plateau region in Tennessee, where up to 2 inches of snow may fall in the higher elevations.

Chilly temperatures will also stick around in the South into the holiday weekend. Lows will plummet into the 30s for the weekend while highs will struggle to make it out of the 40s and 50s in cities like Memphis, Tenn., Atlanta, and Charlotte, N.C. While some milder air will move in for 2024, southerners will still need some layers for New Year's Eve.
