Solar storm prompts radio blackouts

A solar storm over Easter resulted in radio blackouts across Asia and Australia as it hit the planet.

On April 17, a solar eruption was recorded which was then followed by a coronal mass ejection. This was classified as an X1 flare, one of the most powerful possible.

When these flares hit Earth, they interfere with radio waves as happened this weekend causing blackouts in southeast Asia and Australia.

Solar flares also result in more pronounced auroras. We expect the Northern Lights to be particularly active in the coming days as the solar activity continues. Some areas across the highest latitudes could see some auroras. We are keeping a close eye on the potential and locations.

Solar activity is ramping up at present as the sun moves through its latest solar cycle which began in 2019.

Each cycle is marked with periods of greater and lessened activity, the Solar Cycle 25 is expected to peak in July 2025.
