Friday was an active day across much of Florida, but the storms' brunt and severity affected South Florida. The second round of storms that arrived after 8 p.m. triggered several warnings and caused the cancellation of Friday’s lineup for the Ultra Music Festival in Miami.

The stormy Friday that we forecast since last Monday came with a vengeance. Showers moved in quickly over the west coast of Florida early Friday and continued to cover the state the rest of the afternoon. Tornado warnings were issued mainly for Collier and Monroe Counties in the evening, but torrential rains caused flash flooding across parts of Miami Beach in the evening.

Miami International Airport received record rain on Friday, getting 2.34 inches. Fort Lauderdale also established a new record with 2.52 inches of rain. Overall, 2 and 6 inches of rain fell across South Florida, with some isolated areas that received over 6 inches around the Coconut Grove, South Miami, and Coral Gables areas.

What’s next?

The morning has remained mostly cloudy with periods of showers. There is still the chance for storms to swing by South Florida around noon. Some storms could be strong to severe and produce gusts over 40 mph. Also, it is important to highlight that the ground is saturated from Friday’s rains, and the risk of flooding increases greatly with the next rounds of storms during the early afternoon.

We forecast the rains to diminish during the afternoon hours gradually. And clouds to move out by the evening. Temperatures will be around the low 70s by sunset and drop to the low 60s across much of Miami-Dade by sunrise on Sunday. Sunday will be a very nice day with highs struggling to reach 80 degrees during the afternoon and mostly sunny skies.
