So Cal flooding
Deluge continues through Tuesday

So Cal downpours

Heavy rain continues across southern California and the state’s Inland Empire Monday, keeping the danger of flash flooding and mudslides elevated.

As our WeatherRadar shows, the second and strongest atmospheric river event in less than a week to hit California is producing rain from the Pacific Coast near Los Angeles northeastward into Las Vegas. It is continuing to soak Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange counties and the Inland Empire. Heavy snow is hitting the central and southern Sierras and the highest peaks of southern California.

On Sunday, Los Angeles received 4.10 inches of rain, a months worth of rain and the third wettest February day in the city’s history. Several more inches of rain is likely, with more than a foot of rain likely in the mountains and foothills of southern California.

This heavy rain is causing mudslides in the hills and mountains of southern California while roads and rivers flood. Numerous rescues occurred early Monday morning.

Across the Sierras, travel is not recommended. Snow accumulations measured in the feet along with high winds is causing even bigger drifts. Local officials are discouraging driving.

If that wasn’t enough, more than 500,000 customers are without power across California, mostly along the central and northern Coast, northern San Joaquin Valley and the central Sierras.

Looking ahead, the heavy rain continues across southern California and the southern Sierras through Tuesday. A few breaks will occur on Wednesday before another quick shot of rain jets across southern California on Thursday. It won’t be until Friday before things finally settle down across California.

Track all of the changes across California using our WeatherRadar. Weather & Radar meteorologists will continue to produce updates this week.

The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
