The same storm that produced record snowfall over the Gulf Coast States fueled a significant wind storm that moved into Ireland and Scotland. It was an incredible storm that traveled thousands of miles and now leaves nearly a million people without power.

Winter storms in Europe receive official names, which vary depending on the country they affect. This one is named Éowyn. Early Friday morning (local time), Storm Éowyn reached western Ireland. A provisional wind speed record was recorded at Mace Head, Co. Galway at 183 km/h (113 mph). In Co. Down, Northern Ireland, gusts have been recorded at 148 km/h (92 mph) at Killowen. This is the strongest measured since 1998.

This storm was fueled from the winter storm that produced snow along the Gulf Coast on January 22.

Éowyn went under a period of explosive cyclogenesis before arriving in Ireland. Cyclogenesis happens when an area of low pressure undergoes rapid intensification, with explosive cyclogenesis occurring when the pressure drops at least 24 millibars within 24 hours.

In an update, more than 715,000 properties are now without power across Ireland, according to the Irish Electricity Supply Board, with more than 93,000 experiencing power cuts in Northern Ireland. The Police Service of Northern Ireland declared a significant incident earlier this morning and urged all residents not to travel.

In England, train lines between Manchester and Warrington are among many not running due to falling trees and unsafe winds.

We are a global app in over 25 countries. Our team on the coast of Ireland is fighting the strong gales, recording wind speeds, and reporting live on conditions in the area.
