Daily Briefing
Stormy central Plains and Midwest

Storms will fire up across the Plains and Upper Midwest, with record heat building along the West Coast. Erin moves out to sea, but rip currents linger along the coast. These details, along with our daily tropical outlook, are published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

The WeatherRadar shows showers and storms firing up this afternoon from the central Plains to the Upper Midwest. Damaging winds and hail are possible in cities like Denver, Omaha, Neb., and Minneapolis.

A stationary front will send showers and storms across the South again today. While the severe threat is low, flash flooding will be possible across parts of southern Georgia and coastal South Carolina. Heavy downpours are a concern in Macon and Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C.

The TemperatureRadar shows steamy conditions across parts of the West Coast, the Rockies and the Southwest. Highs will surge well into the 90s in Denver and Salt Lake City. Record highs are possible today in Olympia, Wash., Portland, Ore. Palmdale, Calif., as well as Reno and Las Vegas, Nev.

Tropical Update

Hurricane Erin will continue to move out to sea today. While the storm is moving further away from the U.S., the threat of rip currents and high surf will persist along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast coasts.

Three tropical waves trailing behind Erin will need to be closely monitored. The first tropical wave behind Erin now has a 70 percent chance of development over the next 7 days, and the one behind that has a 40 percent chance of development. A small area of interest in between these two waves has a 30 percent chance of development.
