System to develop off the Southeast U.S. for Memorial Day weekend

Tropical Update
Memorial weekend system in the cards

We are closely monitoring a developing low-pressure system off the southeast coast, expected to occur later this week.

As of Wednesday morning, the WeatherRadar indicates the presence of several storm clusters forming along a stalled front across Florida. A low-pressure system is expected to develop from the front, bringing increased rain chances and gusty conditions as it heads toward the East Coast.

The nature of this system, whether it will become a tropical or frontal system, remains uncertain. Typically, early-season, or off-season, storms tend to lack tropical characteristics but can still cause significant impacts.

Regardless of its form, we anticipate that heavy showers associated with it could result in potential flooding issues over the weekend or early next workweek from Georgia to Virginia.

As the approaching system nears the coast this weekend, it is possible that some strong gusts, over 40 mph along the coast, could cause a few branches to fall, resulting in very isolated power outages. Additionally, the onshore flow over the Outer Banks of the Carolinas and other low-lying coastal regions may lead to minor coastal flooding.

The exact extent and severity of these impacts will depend on the track and intensity the system adopts, but it is currently expected to be relatively weak.

Additionally, heavy rain could trigger flash flooding, particularly along the coastal areas extending from northeast Florida to North Carolina on Friday. Subsequently, the threat is expected to shift northward, affecting the Carolinas and extending into Virginia throughout Memorial Day weekend.

If you have plans this holiday weekend, monitoring for further updates as the situation evolves is important. Tune in tomorrow morning for the next update or follow along with the WeatherRadar, which shows the location of storms, including tropical systems, up to 4 days in advance.
