Texas to Michigan - Nocturnal flood threat spans central US

A strong storm system that has been bringing severe weather and heavy rains to the Plains continues to slowly make its way east Monday evening and through the overnight. Flooding is possible from Texas to Michigan until Tuesday morning.

Dangerous tornadoes resulted in Oklahoma City from this very storm system and the severe storm threat lasts until Tuesday morning too. Read Meteorologist Mary May's forecast below.

Low pressure is pulling plentiful moisture out of the Gulf of Mexico, and the southerly and southwesterly flow is strong enough to pull this moisture more than a thousand miles northward. The resulting downpours have dropped 2 to 4 inches of rain, with up to 7 inches locally, from Texas to the Midwest today. The WeatherRadar shows more is on the way.

The heavy rain continues through the night and into the early commute hours of Election Day. A particular area of concern is southeastern Oklahoma, northwestern Arkansas, and south-central Missouri. Rounds and rounds of rain have been falling here since the weekend, and this is also where some of those 7-inch readings have been found.

As the rain continues through Tuesday morning, it will be very important to have at least three ways of receiving a weather warning.
