Tropical update
Earl to a major hurricane, two waves

Two hurricanes

Did you know that it has been almost 2 years since we've had multiple hurricanes churning in the Atlantic at the same time? Danielle and Earl continue to do so today.

The statistic is that the last time we had multiple hurricanes at the same time in the Atlantic was on September 16, 2020, when there was Paulette, Sally, and Teddy.

Hurricane Danielle is also establishing some records. It’s having the most hurricane days at or above 37 parallel north. The storm is quickly losing strength and speed. Models show this system making another loop over the northern Atlantic. It will likely expand its wind field as it transitions to a subtropical or extratropical storm. Its remnants might end up in northwestern Spain early next week.

Soon to be Major Hurricane Earl

On the other hand, Hurricane Earl is gaining strength. Hurricane hunter found its wind field to be expanding early on Thursday. It could reach a high category 3 or low-end category 4 hurricane by Friday. Early will pass east of Bermuda, but close enough to bring tropical storm force winds and any slight shift to the west could bring hurricane-force winds to the tiny island. As of Thursday morning, it’s moving to the north-northeast, but it is expected to shift to the northeast by Thursday evening.

Earl is generating large swells not only to Bermuda, but they will also arrive on the U.S. East coast on Thursday morning. Please make sure to stay out of the water if advisories are up for your beaches.

Earl will stay over water and likely reach a similar latitude as Danielle by early next week but as a tropical or subtropical storm.

Hurricane Season: Terminology you must know

Invest 95L

The next tropical disturbance could be officially named before the work-week ends. It has a short window to become the next name of the storm of the season. If it doesn’t get named by Friday, it will likely not become named as wind shear will increase and hinder its development over the weekend. Regardless, Invest 95L is forecast to remain over water, without affecting land.

Next tropical wave

A tropical wave will leave the west African coast on Thursday. It is not forecast to be named within the next two days, but the chances increase by early next week as it will move over an area of lower wind shear and warm waters. This system is moving west and will continue to do so at a lower latitude than Invest 95L. We will keep a close eye on the track of this wave.
