Tropical waterspout in North Carolina

Tropical systems often produce waterspouts. Tropical Storm Chantal formed over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, before dissipating early this week. A waterspout formed just off Emerald Island, N.C., as Chantal impacted the region.

A waterspout was spotted on Sunday, July 6, as Tropical Storm Chantal's outer bands lashed North Carolina. Chantal made landfall near Litchfield Beach, SC, around 4:00 am EDT on July 6, with sustained winds of 50 mph.

Flash flooding occurred as Chantal brought up to 11 inches of rain to parts of North Carolina. While Chantal has dissipated, lingering moisture from the system continues to bring heavy rain to the Mid-Atlantic today.

A few strong storms may also be in the mix in cities such as Richmond, Va., Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City this afternoon and evening. Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar and make sure your alerts are turned on.
