Unprecedented rainfall triggers town-submerging floods in Europe

Severe weather Europe
Entire towns submerged by floods

Extreme weather is sweeping across parts of Europe, causing damage and triggering potentially historic flooding and mudslides. With more rain on the way, thousands without power, and rescue operations ongoing, the situation is dire.

Severe thunderstorms have caused extensive damage in the southern region of Austria, particularly in the city of Unterkärnten. Civil protection alarms were activated in two municipalities in the districts of Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg. The storms also brought heavy rain, which led to flooding and mudslides, cutting off the region around Bad Eisenkappel. Residents were advised to stay indoors if possible.

The thunderstorm rainfall reached up to 7 inches (180 liters) near Loiblpass, close to the Slovenian border. Additional rainfall is expected in the region, with up to 4 inches (100 liters) possible until Saturday noon, leading to even heavier rainfall in isolated areas.

The soil saturation from previous weeks of rain exacerbated the flooding, causing smaller rivers to report water levels seen once every 10 to 30 years. The Gurk and Glan rivers experienced a 5-year event level.

Northern and western Slovenia also faced torrential rains, leading to traffic disruptions and power outages. The Environment Agency issued a red warning for large-scale flooding, and rescue operations are underway. At least 3 people have been confirmed dead in Slovenia as of Friday afternoon.

The severity of flooding in some locals is extreme. Skofja Loka, Slovenia, for example, saw vehicles, roads, and entire city blocks submerged, with water depths reaching 6 feet in some spots. The floods have been described as unprecedented in the past 1,000 years. Around 16,000 households are without electricity, and the country's army is on standby to provide assistance.

The Defence Minister urged citizens in Kamnik to stay indoors as an emergency situation was declared, leading to the closure of schools. More rain is on the way for the region, which will put more stress on rescue and recovery efforts. You can monitor the situation using our RainRadar on the Weather & Radar app.
