Major Vermont flooding
Devastation hits state's capital

Vermont flooding

The record rainfall hitting Vermont might be finally winding down, but massive flooding and rising waters continues to threaten the Green Mountain State. Massive search and rescue and clean-up effort are ahead.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms swamped the Mid-Atlantic on Sunday before heading into the Hudson Valley and the mountains of northern New England late Sunday, lasting through Monday. Flash flooding was reported from the Philadelphia suburbs northward into the lower Hudson Valley and New York Finger Lakes and Vermont. A once in a thousand-year flood occurred in southern New York on Sunday.

Here is a look at our Monday Live Blog as things unfolded:

The most widespread and hardest hit is Vermont. Between 5 to 9 inches of rainfall has fallen across the state, producing ongoing massive flash flooding overtopping the narrow banks of mountain streams and rivers. In Montpelier, the state capital, a record 5.29 inches of rain fell Monday, shattering the daily record of 0.94 inches set in 1989.

As our WeatherRadar shows, the heavy rain will continue through this morning across northern Vermont before departing into northern Canada. River levels throughout northern Vermont, including the Winooski River through Montpelier, Vt., are at major flood stage. These levels will only rise higher today, worsening the flooding.

Emergency assistance could be slow to arrive. Mudslides and washed-out roads have cut off many parts of the rural state. Montpelier officials are worried about a dam upriver that only has 6 more feet of storage before emergency spillways bring water downstream into the already inundated town.
