A dangerous flood event is ongoing in the Northeast. One person has passed and many homes and businesses are flooded due to the torrential rainfall. This is an ongoing event and this live blog will detail the latest updates throughout the day.

7:30 p.m. Eastern

As we progress into the evening and overnight hours, the intensity of rainfall will gradually decrease. However, it's important to note that the risk of flash floods still persists. It is strongly advised against traveling through the areas most affected by heavy rain. Numerous roads are currently blocked, and the remaining ones pose significant dangers due to their unstable conditions.

On Thursday, we can expect another round of rainfall, albeit with a lower risk of flash flooding. This is because the system will be more progressive, resulting in smaller overall accumulations of rain. Nevertheless, it is important to be cautious as creeks and rivers, which are more responsive to rainfall, may return to flood stage.

Additionally, larger rivers with slower response times will continue to be a concern throughout the week, possibly reaching their peak in the coming days.

"A wild scene in Shrewsbury, Vt." as rushing river water tries to flow over a bridge. Multiple roads in and out of the area area blocked off by debris or flooding. A historic event reminiscent of Tropical Storm Irene that caused catastrophic flooding in 2011.

Jonathan Petramala is in Burlington, Vermont for Weather & Radar and is heading south to track the devastating flooding happening right now in the southern part of the state.

4:35 p.m. Eastern

Catastrophic flooding is underway in southern Vermont where some areas have seen upwards of 5 inches of rain so far today.

4:05 p.m. Eastern

Vermont river water levels continue to rise, and some are expected to rise another 8 feet through the evening. It will be a dangerous night across many locations near rivers and creeks. If you are near one, you could be at risk tonight. Please consider leaving for the night to a more secure location.

3:15 p.m. Eastern

Aside from the heavy rains and life-threatening floods happening across the Northeast, there is a new outlook issued by the Storm Prediction Center that shows an enhanced risk for severe storms across parts of the central Plains. Storms will likely develop late this afternoon into this evening. The main threats will be very large hail, damaging winds (of at least 75 mph) and a couple of tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

2:15 p.m. Eastern

In addition to flash flooding, river flooding is expected to start tonight as water flows into the Winooski River in Montpelier, Vt. Major flooding of this river is expected by midnight.

1:30 p.m. Eastern

Many experienced historic flooding starting Sunday in the Northeast with many spots marking 100-year flood events. however, a 1,000 year flood event was recorded in southern New York as storms swept through Sunday.

Not to be outdone, many in eastern Pennsylvania were dealing with flooded roads and cars Sunday.

10:30 a.m. Eastern

A rare high risk for excessive rainfall has been issued for the Northeast. Flooding impacts have spread from Pennsylvania to New England, where homes and businesses have become submerged since Sunday.

Many are having to change their Monday plans as floodwaters have blocked routes to work and classes. Food watches watches, warnings and advisories have been issued all across the Northeast and New England.
