What is in a weather station?

The world of meteorology involves the use of numerous highly advanced tools, but the key to any forecast is data from weather stations. Do you know exactly what these stations can capture?

There are hundreds of public and private stations across the U.S., all containing a suite of tools. They are typically located on clear, level ground and operate completely autonomously.

Each station is generally equipped with the following:

  • Anemometer for wind speed
  • Barometer for air pressure
  • Hygrometer for humidity
  • Thermometer for temperatures
  • Wind sock and vane to determine wind speed and direction

Many stations will also contain a pyranometer for solar radiation and video cameras for a live look at conditions.

One thing these stations do not measure is pollen counts. It is not currently possible to determine pollen levels without manual counting. Instead pollen is captured by traps and manually counted each day under a microscope.

Weather stations are vital to creating an accurate forecast, and you can even buy your own kits at home if you want hyper-local updates.
