Activity in the Atlantic?

The Atlantic Ocean's hurricane season doesn't start officially until June 1, but that doesn't mean we won't see action before then. We're already monitoring an area of low pressure for potential tropical development.

An area of low pressure located 700 miles north of the Leeward Islands is producing gale-forcewinds and a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Our team of expert meteorologists will keep a close eye on this system using the WeatherRadar.

While further development of this low is not expected, it's a good reminder that hurricane season is just around the corner. While there are 76 days until the official start of Atlantic hurricane season, storms have developed before June 1 in previous years.

The WeatherRadar shows the disorganized system with a low chance of development northeast of the Leeward Islands.

While 97 percent of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic occur between June 1 and November 31, there have been 92 storms recorded in the off-season. Most of these off-season storms occur in May or December.

Only two hurricanes have hit before the March equinox, including the 1908 March hurricane. The 1908 March hurricane impacted the Leeward Islands and the Caribbean between March 6-9 and was a category 2 storm at its peak with winds of 100 mph.
