Stalled pattern starts to break down

Breakfast Brief
Omega block starts to break down

The blocking pattern we have been in over the last few days will start to break down as both lows make some eastward progress. However, rain and storms continue. The Breakfast Brief is published Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

The WeatherRadar still shows an "omega" blocking pattern, with low pressure over the central Plains and low pressure over the Northeast. However, these lows have made some eastward progress, and this stagnant pattern will break down over the next few days.

The two low-pressure systems are making some eastward progress.

The WeatherRadar shows showers and storms continuing across the Rockies, southern and central Plains and the Southeast. A few strong storms are possible across southern Texas, with the Houston area at risk for hail and gusty winds.

Flash flooding is a concern again today across the central Gulf Coast. Localized flooding is possible in cities like Beaumont, Texas, and New Orleans.

Above-average temperatures will be in place across the northern tier today, with highs reaching the mid and upper 70s in Boise, Idaho, and Billings, Mont. Rain will keep highs cooler than average from the Four Corners into the Southeast. Cities like Atlanta are running 10 degrees below average, with highs in the mid-70s instead of the typical mid-80s.

News we're covering today

  • Strong storms in southern Texas.
  • Flood threat for the northern Gulf Coast.
