Daily briefing
Plains cool-down

The switchover from ice-cold water to warm tea or coffee is coming quickly across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest as another burst of early autumn weather spreads southward. Summer remains locked in place across the West. These details, along with our daily tropical outlook, are published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

A cold front moving southward across the Great Lakes and the Midwest will bring an autumn cool down to the northern Plains. As seen clearly on the WeatherRadar, the front and its associated low pressure system will bring waves of rain.

Cooler weather arrives across the Upper Midwest

Behind the rainfall, the TemperatureRadar shows highs in the 60s with lows in the 40s tonight.

The rest of the U.S. will be in the 70s and 80s, with the Southwest and southern California being in the 90s. It will be mostly sunny everywhere, with a few afternoon showers across the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley.

Tropical Update

A tropical wave continues to move west over the east-central Atlantic. Additional development is possible over the next several days as it remains far from land.
