Daily briefing
Heat builds across West

An atypical June pattern is settling across several parts of the U.S., with the West getting hot and the East and central U.S. staying mild. Storminess continues for the South and Northeast. Today's Daily Briefing, published every weekday promptly at 5 a.m. ET, provides the latest forecast from our team of meteorologists, including the latest in the tropics.

The weather across the central, southern and eastern U.S. will mirror Monday's weather. Across the southern U.S., from Texas to the Southeast, waves of storms will develop, causing afternoon washouts along the Gulf Coast. The WeatherRadar shows a few afternoon thunderstorms developing across Florida, so check it often for the latest threats.

Storms will be common across the southern U.S. today.

Up the Atlantic Seaboard into the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, a few thunderstorms and downpours will be likely as a slow-moving front pushes eastward. Across the Great Lakes, scattered showers will be the norm.

A spinning upper-level low will produce scattered showers and clouds throughout the Great Lakes and Midwest. This low will pull unseasonably mild air southward, with the TemperatureRadar showing highs in the 70s throughout the East, with 80s found across the South and Southeast. This is still colder than normal for June.

The West and northern Plains will be on the flip side of the season spectrum. Mid-summer temperatures in the 90s will be common, with triple-digit highs found across the Southwest and interior California. Only the immediate coast will be mild as clouds linger into the afternoon hours.

Tropical Update

The tropics remain quiet across the Atlantic basin. However, tropical storms Barbara and Cosme are located in the eastern Pacific well west of Mexico. Both systems are not a threat to land.
