Daily briefing
Storms for the South, northern tier

A stormy Thursday is in store across the southern U.S., and the northern tier! Rain and lightning will paint the map as two storm systems keep many under umbrellas. Our meteorologist team produces the Daily Briefing, which is published every weekday promptly at 5 a.m. ET and discusses today's big weather news.

The southern Plains will continue having their share of stormy and rainy weather, bringing the risk of scattered flooding for places like Dallas, Austin and Houston, Little Rock, Ark., and Shreveport and Lake Charles, La. Have at least three ways to receive weather warnings.

To the Southeast and down through Florida, more stormy weather will erupt in the afternoon and evening. The WeatherRadar shows thunderstorms erupting around lunchtime and continuing through the late evening.

Afternoon commute issues may be possible in Atlanta, Tallahassee, Charlotte, N.C., and Columbia, S.C. Pay close attention to the WeatherRadar before you head out the door.

Turning our attention to the northern tier, a frontal system will spread rain from Montana to the lower Great Lakes with thunderstorms possible within. The heaviest rainfall will focus on the Twin Cities metro and stretch to eastern South Dakota through western Wisconsin.

Between the rainy systems, summery heat will bake cities like NYC, Washington, D.C., Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Albuquerque and Las Vegas with highs in the 90s and even triple digits for the Southwest. See the details on the TemperatureRadar.

Tropical Update

The Atlantic Hurricane Basin maintains its quiet status, typical for this time of year. The eastern Pacific remains an active spot, however. Barbara and Cosme have dissipated, but two other areas of interest are bringing up the rear.

News we are covering

  • More flooding possible in the South
