The Atlantic Hurricane Season is underway, but where do storms typically form in October? And how many do we see in a typical year?

While many start to think of changing foliage and Halloween, October can still be an active month for hurricanes. The peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season occurs in September, but October and November can still produce destructive storms.

Storms in October tend to develop in the western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, often curving northeastward to impact Florida and the Gulf Coast.

On average, the Atlantic hurricane season typically has 1 or 2 hurricanes that form in October, though this can vary from year to year. October remains an active month, accounting for approximately 15-20 percent of the total seasonal activity, and it typically involves 2 to 3 named storms overall.

As hurricane season ramps up, the Weather & Radar app has multiple ways to keep you up-to-date. The WeatherRadar offers a close look at storms as they develop. Notice the difference between Tropical Storm Ophelia and Hurricane Beryl? You can see the defined eye on Hurricane Beryl.

Our WindRadar provides an additional view of tropical storms and hurricanes. You'll see higher wind speeds showing up on the WindRadar as a tropical storm strengthens into a hurricane.
