Daily briefing: Southeast trouble brewing

Daily briefing
Southeast trouble brewing

The Southeast will need to keep an eye on the Atlantic as Imelda makes it way across the Gulf Stream just off the Southeast Coast. On the West Coast, an autumn Pacific system edges across the West Coast. This, and our tropical update, are available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

The WeatherRadar shows two tropical systems off the Southeast Coast, with bigger Humberto well offshore and Imelda traveling parallel to Florida. Gusty squalls will spread over the immediate coast of Florida and onto the Southeast coast. The seas will remain the most dangerous across the Southeast Coast of the U.S. as Imelda makes a turn eastward, out to sea, and does not directly impact the U.S. Waves could reach 12 feet, and there will be a high risk of rip currents through the first half of the week. Stay out of the water, please.

Strong gusts will dominate the Southeast coast of the United States.

Rain will become more persistent throughout the day from Northern California into the Pacific Northwest. This autumn system will also bring colder temperatures with highs only in the 50s and low 60s. Showers and thunderstorms will also develop throughout the afternoon across the Great Basin and Rockies. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s and low 70s.

The central and northeastern U.S. will be mostly sunny today. The TemperatureRadar shows autumn remaining on vacation in Canada, with afternoon highs in the mid-80s found throughout the southern and central U.S., from Texas to the Dakotas, and Chicago reaching the upper 80s. The Northeast will be in the upper 70s.

Tropical Update

As discussed above, Imelda and Humberto continue to move across the western Atlantic, almost in lockstep with each other. Humberto will turn away from the coast, and Imelda will strengthen into a hurricane by Tuesday afternoon, then make a right turn, staying out to sea.

The rest of the Atlantic remains quiet.
