Watching the Atlantic, smoky Northeast

Scattered showers and storms will bring another day of possible flooding to the Southeast. The Atlantic continues to heat up, and wildfire smoke lowers air quality across the Northeast. These details, along with our daily tropical outlook, are published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

A stubborn front remains stalled across the Southeast, bringing the risk of localized flooding to the region once again today. Those in cities like Tallahassee, Fla., Savannah, Ga., Charleston, S.C., Raleigh, N.C., and Richmond, Va., will want to keep an eye on the WeatherRadar.

Flash flooding is possible again across the Southeast, while rain moves into the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

A warm front will bring rain and a few isolated storms to the northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Wet weather is also forecast for the Pacific Northwest. The rain gear will be needed in cities like Portland, Ore., Seattle, and Spokane, Wash.

Raging wildfires in Canada will create hazy skies across the Great Lakes and Northeast. As some of the smoke mixes down to the surface, air quality may suffer. Those in sensitive groups will want to keep an eye on our air quality tool.

The TemperatureRadar shows dangerous heat building across the Southwest again today, with cities like Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz., warming to the 110s. The Plains will also see above-average temperatures, while cooler-than-average conditions persist across the Southeast and Pacific Northwest due to rain.

Tropical Update

All eyes are on the Atlantic this week. Tropical Storm Dexter will continue to move northeast and is no threat to land. There are two areas to be watched over the next week for possible development. A stalled front in the Southeast could help create an environment ripe for organization as a low develops later today or tomorrow. This area has a 40% chance of development over the next 7 days.

We are also keeping a close eye on a wave off the coast of Africa that has a 50% chance of development over the next 7 days.
