Summer heat is here
Heat records on both coasts

Record setting day across the East
Records will be broken across the East

A summer heat wave continues across the East, with numerous records possible today. Not to be outdone, the Northwest and interior California could also set their own records this weekend.

The TemperatureRadar shows afternoon highs in the middle to upper 90s from northern Florida northward into southern New England. A few spots in the Carolinas could reach triple digits and new daily records will likely be broken throughout the Southeast and along and east of the I-95 corridor from Washington, D.C. to Boston.

Building humidity will make it feel even hotter, with the feels-like temperature reaching the 100-105 range. Check the forecast before heading out and make sure to limit outdoor activities this afternoon, drink plenty of water and check on pets and elderly neighbors.

The heat and humidity will set the stage for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop this afternoon and evening across the Carolinas, Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast. Track the storm development this afternoon using the WeatherRadar.

The East Coast isn't the only place to feel summer heat. California's Central Valley and the Desert Southwest will hit the triple digits today and through the weekend. Although these won't set records, these temperatures are still well above normal.

On Sunday and into early next week, the Pacific Northwest will become hot. Afternoon highs in the 80s and 90s are likely, which will be 15 to 20 degrees above normal and set new temperature records. These areas are not accustomed to the hot weather, with many homes not having air conditioning.
