Almost 8 inches, flooded Miami Beach

South Florida's floods
Almost 8 inches, flooded Miami Beach

Streets were flooded in Miami Beach and other parts of South Florida on Sunday afternoon after severe thunderstorms dominated many metro areas of Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Plenty of heat and moisture fed the instability across South Florida this weekend, but Sunday was the busiest and rainiest day of all. With the famous music festival Ultra happening in Downtown Miami, rain stopped it for a couple of hours for the second year in a row.

Rain started early on Sunday but intensified between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. when heavy rainfall fell over a short amount of time, creating flash floods in the Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach, and Miami Downtown areas. Even areas a bit more west, like Kendall, experienced high rainfall, where almost 8 inches of rain fell. Miami Beach recorded 6.23 inches. Fort Lauderdale Airport established a new record for the day of 2.11, beating the old record of 1.70 inches set in 1944.
