Another active hurricane season forecast

Colorado State University 2025 hurricane season forecast released April 3, 2025.

The start of hurricane season is quickly approaching, and we will see more season forecasts being released. One of the most reliable forecasts is from research scientists at Colorado State University, which calls for an active season.

The forecast calls for 17 named storms, nine of which can become hurricanes, and four major hurricanes. This would be an above-average season. The average season has 14 named storms, nine hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.

The main reasons for this active forecast are the absence of El Niño, which, when present, brings higher windshear, not allowing the systems to continue with their formation, and also warm Atlantic waters. Warm surface water temperatures serve as fuel for the tropical systems to develop. This year's forecast and conditions correlate to 2017, 2011, 2008, and 2006 hurricane seasons.

Remember that hurricane forecasts should be taken as guidance, but they don't tell us where storms will be making landfall. It only takes one storm to make it a busy and catastrophic season for you. Please consider all hazards that a hurricane can bring and the preexisting conditions that could exacerbate impacts to your area.
