Maine ice jam

Arctic blasts not only chill the body, but also can freeze rivers and lakes. The jagged ice that forms can pile up, creating ice jams.

Like the video above showing the icy northern Maine's Aroostock River in Fort Fairfield, Maine, ice jams can back up for miles from man-made objects like a bridge or dam or just a curve in the river.

Ice jams can dam up the water, causing flooding upstream. If the jam melts rapidly or breaks apart, it can also produce a quick burst of water downstream too.
