Breakfast brief
Snowstorm takes aim for southern Plains

The latest winter storm is coming together today and will bring snow across the southern Plains before moving northeast toward the East Coast by Saturday morning. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m. Eastern time.

For the first time this season, snow will be headed for the DFW Metro with heavy rain staying on the storm's southern flank. On the rain-snow line, a frozen mix is expected.

The WeatherRadar shows a cold snowy burst moving down from the Rockies and Plains meeting up with low pressure coming out of northern Mexico. These energies will combine to produce the next big snowstorm. Snow is expected across the southern Plains by brunch time. Have your alerts switched on for the latest information.

This day in weather history

Starting today in 1888, the Columbia River near Portland, Ore., became frozen for two weeks! It would freeze a few times more, with the last time being in 1930.

That snowy burst helping to form the southern Plains storm will have snow showers spreading from the Upper Midwest southward to the Front Range today. Additionally, winds will gust to the 20 to 30 mph range behind the snow, making it feel colder. See the highs on the TemperatureRadar.

Fire weather remains in southern California as gusty conditions persist, but the worst of the wind event is over. Five significant wildfires remain burning and the conditions remain critical today due to the very dry air in place. Keep a close eye on the WindRadar today.
