Breakfast Brief
Gulf Coast remains soggy

A heat wave is continues across the West, with upper 90s setting new records across the Northwest. Flash flooding remains a concern across the northern Gulf Coast.

A ridge of high pressure dominating the West will keep a heat wave locked in place over the next few days. The TemperatureRadar shows highs reaching the 110s in the Desert Southwest, the 100s to near 110 in southern California, the mid-100s for the central California Valleys, and the low 100s for portions of the Pacific Northwest. Even the Mountain West will be in the 80s and 90s Friday.

This day in weather history

Hurricane Irma slammed the northern Lesser Antilles on this day in 2017 as a Category 5 hurricane. Winds of 180 mph devastated Sint Maarten and the British Virgin Islands.

A persistent stationary front will linger along the Gulf Coast today. Showers and downpours will be likely from Texas Gulf Coast to northern Florida into the Southeast. With an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain on top of the rain that has already fallen, flash flooding will be possible. Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar.

A cold front sweeping across the Great Lakes will bring showers and a few thunderstorms across the eastern Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley. More autumn temperatures will sweep out across the northern Plains behind the front. Abundant sunshine and near-perfect autumn weather will prevail across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Upper Midwest.

Tropical update:

There are four areas of concern in the tropics as the Atlantic Hurricane Basin heads into the climatological peak. All four areas have a low chance of development over the next 7 days, but the one in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico is part of the stationary front that is bringing downpours and a flood threat to the length of the Gulf Coast.

Weather & Radar's expert meteorologists are keeping an eye on conditions in the Atlantic Basin. Hurricane Season lasts through November 30th, and there's plenty of time for more development.

The news we're covering today:

  • Heatwave for the West
