Breakfast brief
Arctic blast kicks off 2025

Happy New Year! 2025 is here and we're kicking off the brand new year with the start of an Arctic blast. On the northern corners, two storm systems will be bringing rain and snow. The Breakfast Brief is published daily Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m., eastern time.

Many from the southern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast have been dealing with above-average temperatures since Christmas week. Things are about to change as an Arctic blast makes its way south. The TemperatureRadar shows temperatures in the 30s and 40s from Oklahoma to the Northeast and by Thursday, parts of the Carolinas will be involved.

On this day in weather history

In 1979, temperatures plunged to minus-60 F in Maybell, Colo.!

The coldest temperatures will be in the northern tier in the single digits and teens with the 20s reaching into the Midwest. Watch the temperatures fall over the next few days on the TemperatureRadar.

A large low-pressure system in the Northeast will be bringing snow across the Upper Midwest through the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast today, with rain impacting New England. You can watch the storm slowly move out to the Atlantic on the WeatherRadar but snow will continue well through Thursday before another system moves in with more white stuff to kick off the first Friday of 2025.

To the Mountain West and the central West Coast, more active weather will be spotted for the New Year. Snow will stretch along the Rockies from Idaho and western Montana to Colorado, with rain hitting the Pacific Northwest and northern California.
