Breakfast brief
Big Eastern trouble

A big winter storm will develop across the South, bring a wintry mess to the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic later in the day. This and more will be discussed below. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m., Eastern time.

A winter storm that will roll out of the southern Plains will quickly strengthen and expand, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to the lower Mississippi Valley and the South. The WeatherRadar shows a mix of ice and snow over the Ohio Valley, central Appalachians and the Mid-Atlantic later this evening as the system interacts with the sub-freezing air in place.

This won't be on the winter weather in the U.S. An arctic blast settling across the northern Plains will bring frigid temperatures from the northern Rockies to western Great Lakes.

The TemperatureRadar shows below-zero temperatures in Billings, Mont., Bismarck, N.D. and Minneapolis. Further south, high won't get out of the 20s in Chicago, Kansas City and Denver. Similar temperatures will be found across the Northeast too.

Tuesday morning lows

The rest of the U.S. will be quiet, with Florida having the warmest temperatures as high reach near 80 degrees in Miami. The West will be seasonably chilly with highs in the low to middle 50s in the big near coastal cities of California and the Northwest.
