Breakfast brief
Cold Presidents Day

After a busy weekend of rain, thunderstorms and snow through the South and East, a quiet Presidents Day is ahead. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m., Eastern time.

The big weekend winter storm is sliding out of the Northeast early this morning. The WindRadar shows a blustery northwest wind throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. This will trigger lake-effect snow downwind of the lakes Erie and Ontario.

A blustery Northeast

Behind the system, a fresh batch of arctic air will dive across the northern Plains and Great Lakes. The TemperatureRadar shows highs remaining well below zero in Minneapolis and Bismarck, N.D., while single digits and teens will be found across the rest of the central Plains and the Great Lakes. This includes Chicago, Kansas City and Detroit. The South will be in the 40s and 50s.

The WeatherRadar shows additional snow spreading across the Plains and the northern Rockies. This will caused by another system moving across the Rockies. A bit of snow will also fall across the Intermountain West and Cascades while rain showers sweep into the Northwest.

The warmest spots Monday will be the Southwest and southern California and Florida. Highs will be in the 70s.
