Breakfast Brief - Cool West, Warm East

Breakfast Brief
Cool West, Warm East

A storm system will move east across the central part of the country, bringing rain and thunderstorms from the Dakotas to Texas. The West will stay cooler than average, while the East will continue to warm.

Low pressure and a trailing cold front will bring showers and storms across portions of the Plains today. The low will be centered over Montana throughout the day, and flash flooding is a concern. Keep an eye on the RainRadar if you live in Billings or Helena, Mont. Strong storms with damaging winds and hail will be possible from Grand Forks, Minn., to Lubbock, Texas.

This day in weather history

On this day in 1967- Hurricane Beulah deluged Brownsville, TX, with 12.19 inches of rain in 24 hours, to establish a record for that location.

Below-average temperatures continue for the West, while warmer air remains trapped in the East. While the remnants of Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 will keep some areas in the South and Mid-Atlantic cooler, temperatures will be 10-15 degrees above average in cities like New York, Boston and Philadelphia.

The divide in temperatures caused by this cold front on WeatherRadar is clear. The good news is that Phoenix's 113-day record-breaking streak of days over 100 degrees ended yesterday. Highs in Phoenix today will be in the mid-90s.

Tropical update:

There are two areas we are keeping an eye on today. The remnants of Gordon could redevelop later this week in the central Atlantic. There's also the possibility that a low could develop in the Caribbean this weekend or early next week. This area bears watching as it may continue to develop in the long term.

The news we're covering today:

  • Cool West, above-average East
  • Storms for the Plains
