Breakfast Brief
Days-long severe pattern begins

Severe weather and flooding rains are in the forecast through the holiday weekend. Record-breaking heat will keep air conditioners running in the Plains today while a snowstorm impacts the northern and central Rockies. The Breakfast Brief is published Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

A potent storm system will trigger severe storms today across the Corn Belt and into the southern portions of the Upper Midwest. Scattered severe storms could produce large hail and gusty winds with an isolated tornado possible.

Storms will begin firing in the mid-afternoon hours and could bring issues to the afternoon commute and any evening plans. Severe weather will be in the forecast east of the Rockies through the Eastern weekend. Have at least three ways to receive weather warnings and have your app alerts switched on to receive the latest information.

On the back end of the storm system is another storm bringing heavy snow across the northern and central Rockies and High Plains of Montana and Wyoming. On the storm's southern flank, the Four Corners will be dealing with a mix of heavy rain and thunderstorms to snow. Denver residents will have a couple of different seasons within a matter of hours with this storm.

Across the southern Rockies and southern High Plains, gusty winds pose a fire weather threat. Albuquerque in particular and suburbs to the east are under an extreme risk for wildfires with humidity levels only at 10 percent and winds reaching past 45 mph at times. Monitor the WindRadar to know when these gusts calm down.

Not to be outdone, intense heat in the 90s and even the triple digits brings the possibility for records to be broken from southeast New Mexico to northern Texas and into Kansas.

Records from 1926, just shy of one hundred years ago, in Salina and Concordia, Kan., could be broken as highs reach the low-to-mid 90s.
