Breakfast brief
Historic snow storm moves out

A powerful southern snowstorm moves out today, but cold air will linger for many. A clipper will bring snow to northern Plains and upper Midwest. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m. Eastern time.

The WeatherRadar shows the historic winter storm that slammed the Gulf Coast, pushing off the East Coast and taking the snow and ice with it. It will still be a treacherous morning across parts of the Gulf Coast, north Florida and south Georgia as roads remain in poor condition following the wintry conditions.

While the winter storm may be moving out, arctic air will stick around. The TemperatureRadar shows highs ranging from 20 to 30 degrees below average across much of the eastern half of the country.

While snow is moving out of the South, a clipper will bring snowy conditions to the northern Plains and upper Midwest. Lake effect snow will also pile up downwind of the Great Lakes through midweek.

Powerful Santa Ana winds will continue in southern California. Gusty winds and low humidity will keep critical fire conditions in place. Avoid burning or any activities that may produce sparks.
