Breakfast Brief
A quiet week ends quietly

The quiet week of weather will end on another quiet note. It will remain hot across the southern U.S., with more records likely being broken.

First off, the WeatherRadar shows the sun shining across most of the U.S. The only area of clouds and showers will be along a cold front streaking across the Midwest and western Great Lakes. This will bring showers and a rumble of thunder for Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago and Detroit.

Once again, it is unseasonably hot across large stretches of the southern U.S. The TemperatureRadar shows afternoon highs in the upper 80s across the Southwest, Texas and South. southern Mississippi Valley, South and the Southeast. Daily temperature records could be broken in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Memphis, Little Rock, Nashville and Atlanta. A few spots of the Desert Southwest will be in the 90s this afternoon.

It will be cooler across the northern Plains, Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with more seasonal 50s and 60s common.

The Western U.S. will be sunny with highs in the 50s and low 60s in the Northwest and Mountain West, while California will be in the 70s. Las Vegas and Palm Springs, Calif., will be in the 80s.

2003 Cedar Fire

On this day in 2003, the Cedar Fire, fanned by Santa Ana winds, spread rapidly across San Diego County. It would go on to destroy 2,000 buildings and kill 15 people by the time it was extinguished in December of that year.

Tropical update:

No tropical development is expected over the next several days.
