Breakfast brief
Storms head East

Wednesday forecast

The stormy work week continues Thursday with trouble brewing across parts of the East and the western high Plains. Winter won't give up its grip across the northern Rockies.

Most powerful earthquake in history

The most powerful earthquake ever recorded (9.4-9.6) hit Chile on May 22, 1960. On the next calendar day, a quake-generated tsunami hit Hilo, Hawaii, killing 61. The tsunami would hit New Zealand, Japan and southeastern Australia too.

Today's weather outlook

The WeatherRadar will be tracking several rounds of thunderstorms today. The same system that brought severe storms to Iowa on Tuesday and the southern Plains to the Northeast on Wednesday will continue its eastward push.

Broken lines of storms will be possible throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley southward into the South and the Southeast. A few of these storms could produce damaging winds and small hail.

A new storm system moving out of the Rockies will be the trigger for a fresh batch of thunderstorms across the high western Plains later Thursday. These big storms will be capable of producing damaging winds and a few isolated tornadoes from Texas to the Dakotas.

The same system feeding the high Plains storms will produce more high elevation snow across the northern Rockies. Several inches of snow are possible in the highest spots, with winter storm warnings posted for those areas.

The TemperatureRadar will be tracking more near triple-digit highs across southern Texas and along the Rio Grande, while the Southwest hits the 90s. Highs in the 70s and 80s will be found throughout the Plains and East while the Rockies and Northwest stay in the chilly 50s and 60s.
